Common questions

What script formats work?

Paste text or open a .txt or .fountain file. Scene Partner understands:

  • Screenplay layout: the character name in capitals on its own line, with the dialogue underneath. Parentheticals like (quietly), extensions like (V.O.) and (CONT’D), and scene headings that start with INT. or EXT. are recognised.
  • Stage-play layout: lines that start with the name, like “HAMLET. To be…” or “HAMLET: To be…”, or the name on its own line above the speech. ACT and SCENE headings start new scenes.
  • Fountain files, including the title page, forced headings and notes.

PDFs aren’t supported directly. Open the PDF, select and copy the text, and paste it in. If a name or line comes out wrong, open the script and use Fix characters and lines to merge names, give a line to someone else, or mark it as a stage direction.

The voices on my iPhone sound robotic, or there are only one or two

Scene Partner uses the voices installed on your device. On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices, choose your language and download an Enhanced or Premium voice. Then close and reopen Scene Partner, and pick the new voice under Partner voices.

The first time you open the app, voices can take a moment to appear. If the list is empty, leave the screen and come back. Speech also starts only after you tap a button, which is how iPhone handles sound from web apps. Check that your ringer switch isn’t on silent if you hear nothing.

Self-tape isn’t recording
  • Allow camera and microphone access when asked. If you said no earlier, on iPhone go to Settings, Safari, Camera and Microphone (or tap the “aA” menu in Safari, then Website Settings). On Android, tap the lock icon next to the address in Chrome.
  • Video recording needs a recent browser: Safari on iOS 14.3 or later, or a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  • Close other apps that might be using the camera, like video calls.
  • If the partner voice is quiet while recording, turn the volume up before you start. Some phones lower speaker volume while the microphone is in use.
  • Very long takes use a lot of storage. If the device is nearly full, download the take straight away and delete older ones.
How do I move my scripts to a new phone?

Everything is stored on your current device, so move it with a backup. On the old phone, open Settings, Save backup (turn on “Include my recorded lines” if you want those too) and send the file to yourself, for example by AirDrop, email or a cloud drive. On the new phone, open Scene Partner, go to Settings, Restore from backup and choose the file.

Self-tape takes aren’t in the backup. Download the ones you want to keep first.

How do I install Scene Partner on my home screen?

iPhone and iPad: open the site in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.

Android: open the site in Chrome, tap the menu, then Install app (or Add to Home screen).

Computer: in Chrome or Edge, click the install icon at the right of the address bar.

Once installed, Scene Partner works offline.

How does Memorize mode decide what to show me?

Each of your lines starts in full. Every time you mark it “Got it,” it fades further: first letters, then blanks, then hidden. “Close” brings it back tomorrow, and “Missed” makes it due again right away. A line counts as memorized once you get it right with only blanks or nothing showing. Choose “Due lines only” to review just the lines that are scheduled.

Is my script private?

Scripts, recordings, takes and progress stay on your device and are not uploaded. Read the full privacy policy.

Plans and purchases

Scene Partner is free to download. Paid plans in the iPhone and Android app are shown on the plans screen before you buy. To bring your purchases to a new phone, use Restore Purchases on the plans screen in the app. Cancel a subscription any time in your Apple Account or Google Play subscriptions; refunds are handled by Apple or Google. See the terms of use.
